55 \ ALTITUDE legacy, studying at the Vevey photography school. Daniel’s photographs from the 1990s onwards are now legendary, akin to his grandfather’s works, which include films on Valais archived at the Martigny Media Library. Charles also made the documentary "La Grande Fontaine" winning the Best Mountain Film award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1957. "HISTORIC ARCHITECTURES, WINTER LANDSCAPES, AND THE ORIGINS OF SKIING IN CRANS-MONTANA" Starting on January 3, 2025, a selection of about thirty of Charles Dubost’s photographs will be exhibited at the Hôtel du Parc, with additional displays at Guarda Golf, possibly in the former Dubost premises in Crans. Organized by the AEA Art-Ethno-Archi association, presided over by the author of these lines, the exhibition will feature 180 scanned and enlarged photos. The photos will be available to buy with the proceeds going to AEA. The origins of skiing in Montana are highlighted with early photos by Dr. Stephani from 18991904, tracing back to English mountaineers, especially Sir Arnold Lunn, who stayed at the Palace in Montana in 1908, formerly the Beauregard sanatorium. In his book "Skiing" Arnold Lunn developed early alpine skiing techniques. Locals fashioned skis to hurl themselves down mountain slopes and village hills. The first ski school and club followed these pioneers, with ski-lifts’ ancestors, funicular sledges, depicted by Charles Dubost. The exhibition also reveals Dubost’s artistic talent in capturing winter landscapes in black and white, like the iconic Weisshorn photo using the carbon print technique. The architecture of old hotels, such as the skiers in front of the Hôtel Royal, evokes nostalgia for those who knew the resort from the 1930s to the 1960s. Dr. Stephani, who was not only a physician but also the 1936 President of the Montana Development Society, attracted the first tourists to the region, competing with Montana and using the Weisshorn as a backdrop. Charles Dubost opened his photography studio first in Montana and then in the Crans Galleries, linking the landscapes of both Montana and Crans.
