38 culture With some sixty works (installations, paintings, sculptures, photographs and videos), INTERSTELLAIRE, like the hit film, invites us to think openly of the wonders of space, and to imagine links and parallels between new and ancient myths. In the Aboriginal and island cultures of the Torres Strait, everything on Earth is reflected in the sky. Many Dreamtime stories, like that of the Seven Sisters, tell of this connection with the universe. The sky holds a wealth of knowledge for those who can interpret and read the information it provides, rather like deciphering a map or browsing an encyclopaedia. Reading the stars is still used for navigation, or as a seasonal calendar for hunting and gathering. Replicating Aboriginal works from the Bérengère Primat Collection, artgenève’s curatorial team opens up, with a slight counterpoint, paths that are sometimes optimistic, sometimes disillusioned, sometimes funny, whimsical and often poetic. INTERSTELLAIRE is a testament to contemporary art’s ability to transport us to a universe with a complex surface, where dimensions are turned upside down, densities tilted, where time stands still and our perception opens up to the extra-lucid.
